Chapter Ten

Ashton

“Oof!”

I cursed silently as I yanked Marky off the stairs. I’d hoped to incapacitate him without a sound, but luck hadn’t been on my side in a while.

Marky opened his mouth, and I clamped my hand over it before anything else could escape. Unfortunately for Marky, I still hadn’t gotten the hang of my vampire strength yet.

My palm smashed through his jaw in a spray of blood and bone fragments as he fell limp in my arms. With sickening clarity, his heartbeat sounded through his chest as strong as ever. I looked at his bloody face and my gums ached.

Without thinking, I buried my teeth in his artery and drank deeply.

I’d had vampire blood when I was a human, but it paled in comparison to drinking human blood while being a vampire.

The hot, thick liquid coursed down my throat, filling me with strength, clearing my mind, and satisfying a hunger I hadn’t even known was there.

When I’d finally pulled the last dregs from Marky, I tossed him into a corner and wiped my mouth. It came away bloody, and the part of my brain that still thought like a human wanted to recoil, while the overpowering vampire urges just wanted more.

Only a second or two had passed since my victim let out his last sound, which was just enough time for the men on deck to react.

Another flurry of bullets rained down on me from above. I could see each one of them as they burst through the ceiling and spliced through the air. They were easy enough to avoid since I could move faster now.

I must have gotten cocky as I tested my reflexes, because one of the fiery hot pieces of metal caught me right in the shoulder. The bullet burrowing beneath my skin hurt just as much as a vampire as it had as a human. I bit my lip to stop the growl of pain from working up my throat when an idea hit me.

“Argh!” I yelled, letting out the agony I’d been trying to suppress in an exaggerated yell I hoped sounded more real than it felt.

The firing stopped as the men above fell silent.

Finally, one of them spoke. “You think we got him that time?” he whispered.

The man who seemed to be in charge grunted. “I don’t know. Go check.”

“Fuck that! Look what happened to Marky!”

“We won’t know what happened to Marky until you go down there.”

“I’m not fuckin'–”

The click of a gun being cocked cut off the rest of his words.

“You’ll go down there, or I’ll just kill you myself right now.” There was a tense pause before he spoke again. “Move that gun an inch and you’ll be taking a permanent nap in the Sound.”

I held my breath as I waited to hear if I’d have one or two more assholes to deal with.

Finally, the man in charge started speaking again. “Now, go down there and make sure the bodyguard is dead.”

There was a loud sigh and then the soft creak of his steps.
